Foundation Repair 101

Foundation problems can occur when expanding and contracting clay soil on the exterior puts pressure on the walls.  Negative grade around a home also forces water toward the foundation walls.  In addition, failure of the perimeter drainage tiles can also cause problems to occur.

Damp proofing is the application of tar to the exterior of the foundation wall.  This can slow the entry of moisture into your basement. Tar also does not stop water from entering existing or new cracks in the foundation.

Many companies now claim to control your basement water problems by spraying the interior of your foundation and installing a baseboard system. But water control systems are able only to reroute the water entering your basement. The baseboard system directs water toward a drain or sump pump pit in the basement without alleviating water, dampness or moisture from entering the basement. Endless opportunities are left for molds, mildews and insects to thrive!

Waterproofing involves the application of a roll-on rubber membrane.  This is like putting a “rubber boot” on your walls and stop water from entering through existing or future foundation cracks.
